Dama dama

Even this cervid, smaller and more stocky than the red deer, is a species currently living. High about 1 m to the shoulder, it has characteristic horns (or antlers), formed by a palmed rod, with dorsal daggers. It lives now, as in prehistoric times, mostly in open woodlands or in Mediterranean scrubs. It appears in Italy about 300,000 years ago with a primitive subspecies (Dama dama tiberina). After its extinction in Italy, during the coldest stages of the last glacial, it was reintroduced into historical times in Europe by the Greeks and then by the Romans.
