Hippopotamus anphibius
The "king of rivers" had, during the Pleistocene, features very similar to that of current hippos. It was taller than one and a half meters at the shoulder and had a large, flat, wide head and tiny eyes and ears. The large nostrils could be closed for frequent dives and its canines, with continuous growth, could reach 80 cm in length.
Water was his natural environment. Although herbivore It could sometimes be very aggressive. It appeared in Italy and Europe about 500,000 years ago and was particularly widespread in the last interglacial. It disappeared with the early stages of the last glacial.
